Now that everyone’s
Happily Ever After
I’ll close this Fairy Tale
Grimm—
whose endings never fail—
climbing locks of gold
to a window made of stone
willing to trust fall
blindly and be done—
listening for tears
to help me see again.

Now that everyone’s
Happily Ever After
I’ll close this Fairy Tale
Grimm—
whose endings never fail—
climbing locks of gold
to a window made of stone
willing to trust fall
blindly and be done—
listening for tears
to help me see again.
When I found her like
a set of lost keys,
it was a mystery even to her
where she’d been hiding
or who left her there—but
I knew that look, as I’d worn once—
and it wasn’t me anymore.
So I let her sleep.
And I let her eat.
Then after her strength regained,
I walked her to the wood,
and watched her twirl with the wind—
of all that remained,
and all she’d forgotten—
like a dizzy spell I’d soon be too.
You can sense it you know,
yourself shutting down—again
with the change of scenery, again
with the change of heart.
It’s like trying to stop a freight train
running yourself empty, till
all there is is but to explode.
It’s a very empty place to be living.
It’s a very empty place to be born.
It’s a beautiful fall day, though, isn’t it?
Isn’t it beautiful, this
in depth exhibition of yourself—
without the guts, with all the answers
and nothing all that good say.
