though your spirit
may change
and your smile
may waver
I knew you long before
and
you are your own savior

footnotes in nursery rhyme
Got up this morning ahead of my time
shook fear from my hair and tears from my eyes
took to the mirror and spoke to this guy
who said he knew me from before —
it’s there that he unlocked the door.
He gave me a sunrise he gave me his hand
he told me a secret I could understand
life isn’t a journey or destination
it’s your choice to choose to buy in —
for me it’s better not to win.
So I sharpened my memory and tore out his tongue
recycled the organ from which I’d dislodged
filled it with the secret and sealed it shut
if X marks the spot then I’m fine —
love’s just footnotes in nursery rhyme.
Connecting the dots which soon filled my head
aligned with ideas I spoke with each step
life ain’t no cake walk or deal with respect
it’s your throat or mine well of course —
I’d take mine to spare you the course.
It’s kill or be killed so I’m on my knees
no fear any longer just tranquility
it’s obvious ain’t it half hearted pity
runs deep like the roots of despair —
no one’s got the cure or should dare.
So with that in mind one swift hit should do
a hole in the head hell it ain’t nothing new
I was head over heals now I’m sinking through
the clouds which look soft from afar —
at the end of this there’s only dark.
With all things considered it’s lovely I guess
like spilled paint confetti this hole in my chest
I’ve dug it before since third grade I guess
my actions speak louder than words —
it’s all been a blessing and curse.
This Adam’s apple is proof of Eve
Did you think it would be that easy
just to walk away.
Like we were the 30th of April
now it’s the 1st of May.
The sun here is always shining
yet I still see rain.
I was California dreaming
just to numb the pain.
Awake
or asleep
It doesn’t really make a difference
Blue
or green
The ocean looks the same
Black
or white
Just pictures on a TV screen
You
and I
We’re searching for significance
I guess…
You had to make your move
like we were playing chess.
Across from one another
we are at our best.
Stuck between the sun and moon
like all the rest.
Before my Confirmation
I never did confess.
Up
or down
The world’s full of extremes
Then
or now
The choices never change
Commit
or don’t
Either way there’s so much pain
You
and I
We’re just finger painting our esteem
I guess…
Then a baby’s born
Then another one and then some more
While a preemie dies
It’s not her fault that he’s premature
Grief
or guilt
Both come in due time
Live
or die
Flip a coin put it aside
Bitter
or sweet
This Adam’s apple is proof of Eve
You
and I
Banished from that Garden
we couldn’t find.
Still, did you think it would be that easy
just to walk away?
As Mona Lisa smiles at her Rembrandt
She’s Mona Lisa
looking across the lobby
With her eyes
transfixed on his cold dead body
While the kids line up
single filed and obviously
Unaware that there’s any problem
It’s a warm fall day
colored leaves spin around
And there’s this tired old man
selling shaved ice proudly
Nice to meet you sir
can I help you out
As Mona Lisa
smiles at her Rembrandt now
He was an eye sore for her eyes
it hurt so much still she had to look twice.
And there was something in her smile
lips spread thin like she was in denial.
I didn’t mean to
bother you it’s a habit
I just noticed you
looking lost or sad
With this expression
drawn like a bloody bath
Please now excuse me
I’ve gotta be getting back
Hey wait a minute
won’t you just take a second
To admit that something
is wrong in your head
And if you’d like to
call me sometime and
Chat when you’re feeling
better I’d quite like that
She wrote her name down on his ticket
her area code and seven lovely digits.
Then he wrote in the palm of her hand
a little note that read I think I’d understand.
So Mona Lisa
held her hands calm and steady
Framed herself back
against the wall already
She now felt out of place
like in a fictional setting
While some students
drew her in lines quite badly
What’s the point of hanging around
when rarely any good comes to you in this town.
Thats when she placed her name tag on the floor
and made out for Leonardo exiting the door.
and CHEERS
Like a knife
slides
warm through butter
so gently does her hand
into mine
telling me all
I need to know
about her character
and it takes all my courage
not to melt
with the toast
she proceeds to deliver
glasses raised
and CHEERS
go our spirits
together
down the hatch
spread eagle
she’s tolerant
thin
and warm
irresistibly open
like a wound
gapes
breathing in
and out
then in then out
we go
through the empty streets
at dawn
searching, always searching
for the next.
At the end of the day
At the end of the day
we’re all just
butthole tissue
flesh, bone, and spirits
away from the truth
if there is any, well
we’ll surely find out
at the end of the day.
So keep it clean cause
you’ll never really know
until you do, I guess.
Alvaro my friend
Alvaro
my friend
you left too soon
but what about
today
has me
thinking of you
is it Jimmies guitar
or my faded tattoo
perhaps it’s the night
as I howl at the moon.
Alvaro
my friend
you left too soon
and I never
got the chance
to say
thank-you
for all the nights
you offered your friendship
wanting nothing more
than good conversation.
Alvaro
my friend
you left too soon
but your spirit
it seems
continues to bloom
within my soul
like divine intervention
so my life is yours
solely by extension.
Which brings me
now
to think of you
how if you were here
you’d tell me to
let go this dirge
and create something new
Alvaro
my friend
we’ve got work to do.
a virgin spirit
Take a sip
than another
it’s only tonic
mixed with water
a virgin spirit
just like you ordered
so take your time
and stew, you’re
reinventing you.
measured in peanuts
It takes more courage
to know your worth
and walk away
than to stay, resentful
knowing that your worth
is being measured in peanuts
I Voted
For what exactly
I am not sure
But today I voted
I voted for people who unlike I
Have power
Power to make a difference
Power to make a change
Power to exercise our rights
As a community of working people
We have power
I have power
And you have power
For what exactly
I am not sure
Until tomorrow
VOTE!
