The Road Between

Sometimes all there is to do is drive

and drive, and drive, and drive until

you forget to where you’re going,

you forget from where you came,

and you remember there’s no difference

except the road which lies between.

And when you don’t got the wheels

or means or place to stay

you walk, and walk, and walk until

it all makes sense enough to go away.

And you remember not to worry so much

as in all walks of eternity

you’re a part of this one, and the heartache

pain and blame is all just slapstick.

It’s a grand ole comedy of magic and men

who’d drown before they’d ever dive in.

So the next time I, see-you-me,

I hope we’re swimming in the Milky Way!

Travelers through time and time forgot,

our elephant minds remember.

Walking in the desert of night

For once in this hell of a lifetime

I’m not calling anyone out—

Walking in the desert of night stars

With my own well being

I no longer glance behind—

Finally I realize there is nothing left behind

Nothing that isn’t worth looking forward to—

My soul is clean, my eyes are clear

I no longer cry for those I cannot save—

Saving myself, one step at a time.

Topanga

Halogen yellow bursts

of light, turn signals

burn bright, through

white lines of Topanga

Morning sunrise, her and I

up all night, we rise

like silhouetted tree

under the belly of LA sky,

gaze upon a sea of fog

clouds, shower faint

hallucinations of

spontaneous future

Rain Shower Souls

What happened to that rain shower soul?

The sun’s still shining but where did it go?

And all those sidewalk chalk talking dreams

came loose like a button torn at the seams.

What happened to that day dream tune?

The song’s still playing but how bout you?

And all those streetlight coffee shop blues

aligned like the sun eclipsed by the moon.

Did it help to regret all that came too soon?

Like skipped rocks reflect rippled waters in June?

Cause that honey was sweet so I tasted it all

aware that no one dear could break this fall.

Did it help to indulge in the depths of the Eve?

If Adam were blind don’t you think he’d still see?

Cause more often than not two stars in the sky

do cross one another in the blink of an eye.

What a trip to be youthful, dramatic and bold

To walk just a block with those rain shower souls

But age without reason can make you quite old

I’ve stitched my last button, when you’re ready I’ll go.

When Vonnegut takes shots at war

When Vonnegut takes shots at war

he doesn’t do with rifle or

fight with claims to settle scores

though prisoner he’d been before.

When Vonnegut takes shots at war

his words like steel are sharp and coarse

no fluff or zeal just fond remorse

for those who buried their loved and more.

When Vonnegut takes shots at war

his style’s frank no either or

like shrapnel strikes straight to the core

if death must come than make it pure.

When Vonnegut takes shots at war

his battle’s fought with valor worn

like Stars and Stripes and bones ashore

still “so it goes” forevermore.

the great vast cosmos

What a beauty

is the moon

my moon to be exact

as there are many moons

though tonight

under a starless sky

it is only I

navigating

the great

vast cosmos

naked &

alive

stars

While everyone was looking around

for celebrities and stars

I was looking at em all

and wonderin

with fire burning in my eyes

what it was they couldn’t see

that I saw so vividly in all of them.

a beacon

There must be something better

than living in this state

like a free floating feather

I must be on my way

it just took me some time

like Jenny on the run

through city lights, a heroine

to forest I have come

to recognize the stars

on a boat far out at sea

floating through the sky

my legs have taken leave,

and behind all of the people

I’ve passed along the way

is a shining light, a ray of hope

a beacon to this day.

Reason #2 for Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail

Elizabeth says I’m happier on the West Coast.
So if her observations are to be correct
I must, at least for the sake of argument
test its soil
drink its water
and observe its stars
2,668 miles from Campo to Manning Park
for 160 nights, give or take
before settling for the East Coast.
